Rock Island Full Gospel Church was formally named in 1947, but had its beginning much earlier than that. In 1937 Selma Burger and her sisters, Ann, Mellie Dee and Vera had a tent revival in Rock Island. After this first tent meeting, services were held in various buildings around town until work was begun on a frame church building in 1946 and completed in 1947.
Selma (Sam) Burger was an evangelist and was well known in many states. Many successful ministries throughout the United States credit Sis. Burger and the Rock Island Full Gospel Church for their beginning in the ministry.
After Sis. Burger went home to be with Jesus in 1983, the church family proceeded with regular services. There was not an official Pastor until 1991 when Bro. Floyd (Buzz) Snyder accepted the pastorate. He resigned in 1992 at which time Bro. Nick Williams came and served as Pastor. In 1987 construction on the present church building was started. The present church building was completed and dedicated on Oct. 21, 1989.
Today, led by Pastor Calvin Harris (started in 2013), RIFGC is still building on the great legacy and heritage of faith left by his predecessors. The church has a healthy respect for its rich history and tradition, we will continue to serve God with the expectation that God will use this church to fullfill His divine purpose.
